Discovering Who I Am Through Media Studies

Hello, my name is Sophia Elena Salomon, and I go to Pembroke Pines Charter High School. I’ve been in the charter school system since kindergarten because my mom teaches at Central Campus Elementary. School has always been a big part of my life, not just because of academics, but also because of the community it has built for me and my family.

At home, I live with my mom, dad, two brothers, and my grandparents. My family is very close, and my brothers play a big role in my everyday life. My youngest brother is turning four in January, and my other brother just turned 13 in March. Since I’m the oldest, I’ve grown up with the responsibility of setting an example for them, but also with plenty of competition, especially with my 13-year-old brother. Being only a year and a half apart has made us push each other in almost everything we do, which is one of the main reasons why I’m so into sports today.

Sports have been huge part of my life and have honestly molded me into the person I am today. I play girls flag football for my school’s team, and I used to play recreational soccer until eighth grade. I eventually decided to try out for the school soccer team, and coincidentally, I made it which was a big moment for me back then. More recently, I’ve gotten into pickleball, which I play most weekends with my friends at their communities. I mainly just enjoy being active and out of the house. Other than sports I like to fish I've gotten more into it recently after my birthday I've bought a new reel, lures, stronger line this is my favorite past time in the offseason.

I believe my passion for sports connects well with AICE Media Studies because something else I might want to pursue in the future is to become a sports journalist I feel like that's something I could really enjoy and have fun with. I feel like by taking this course it will help me learn skills that would be useful in that kind of career, like communicating ideas clearly because that's one of the main areas I struggle deeply in. I think learning how to make media that people actually want to read would help me to figure out what my own style and voice is.

Overall, I’m excited to take this course because it feels like a natural fit for my interests and goals. I hope to learn not just the technical skills, but also how to express myself creatively and more properly, while using my passion for sports to create media that informs and entertains.
